Pierre Marcolini, Brussels

My biggest regret of my Barcelona trip in Aug 07 was not making a visit to the top quality chocolatier – Oriol Balaguer. I remeber I say i have to go there no matter what, however, friends have been pulling me back saying ” we won’t let you go there alone” as i was the only person that is chocolate lover. So I end up not being able to go.. and now still thinking about it!!!!

Therefore, with my Brussels trip before xmas, to see its xmas market and munch! I was determined to step on the doorsteps of Belgian’s chocolate heaven. Instead of wandering around the streets and buy any chocolate, i have done the prep work like any of my previous trips, desserts and chocolates shops list. The list includes Pierre Marcolini, Wittamer and Debailleul; surely there are more chocolatier in Brussels and other parts of Belgian…

so here i went, Pierre Marcolini, at the Place Sablon – the posh area of Brussels as all top quality shops are located there for some reasons.  We even found their open up workshop opposite Wittamer cafe, where they produce chocolate or biscuits in front of you and also has a small shop area. This shop its located at the corner of Rue des Minimes, you can see it straight away as nearby you will see tourist or locals holding this Pierre Marcolini paper bag like you would get from any top chocolatier.

I did want to go mad with chocolate spending, and my friend were like you spent a few more euros for this box? I don’t know why, it probably be so long before i go back to Brussels so why not get the best presented box? In the end, i got this box, and some Chocolate covered marshmallow. Didn’t went mad with the spending, as I was trying to keep myself to a budget.

When i presented this box to my parents, they just say, you always buy chocolate! With their first bite, dad said bitter. my momm gave the similar compliment… but to me, wow, smooth and enough cocao taste. the ganache taste subtle and rich… yum, this is what you call quality chocolate…! The box came with many different ganache, toffee and etc.  Frankly speaking, i no longer eat anything below 55% cocao content chocolate… as i found bitter chocolate taste nicer than milk, and white chocolate its just worse! Talking about chocolate covered marshmallow, yummy, its one of their latest invented product, vanilla flavour marshmallow.. you can see the vanilla seeds in the marshmallow. Sweet marshmallow with dark chocolate, that balances out the sweetness of the marshmallow; thus, overall its perfect sweetness.

Its rare to find Pierre Marcolini chocolate in UK, the only shop that sells small amount of his product its at East London – Verde & Co, locate opposite Spirtialfield market.

Make sure you make a visit if you pop to Brussels. =)

  1. I was just given a bar of Pierre Marcolini’s chocolate for Christmas…it looks so good! And you MUST go to Oriol Balaguer when you go back to Barcelona…his chocolates are so delicious! It is a bit unfortunate that his shop is a bit out of the way…

  2. I’m also a chocolate lover (dark) and I was given a box of Pierre Marcolini’s dark chocolate – all 75% squares, differing from origin (Venezuela, Ghana, Madagascar,…) – simply delicious! Have you tried AMEDEI chocolates – an italian, family run chocolate brand. They can be found at Fortnum & Mason. I also love Valhrona chocolates (especially the 85%). By the way, Oriol Balaguer was also on my “to do list” when I visited Barcelona but unfortunately I didn’t visit his store either.
